COAL GROVE, Ohio (WSAZ) – If you look at marching band members and think they look younger every year, you’re not wrong when you’re at a Coal Grove Hornets game.
Music prodigy Griffin Lackey, a 4-th grader at Dawson-Bryant Elementary, is a standout percussionist with the varsity band on Friday nights.
He says he can play multiple instruments, including the bagpipes.
This is band director Karen Jarvis’s first year in the role. She says she was delighted to inherit the 9-year-old, who wowed the previous director with his ability beyond his years.
“He started coming to rehearsals and showing an interest,” Jarvis said. “(The previous director) was blown away and just said, ‘Hey, why don’t you come hang out with the band on Friday nights?’”
“Band is my life,” Lackey said. “I actually like it.”
“To have a little guy like Griffin come out and find his joy and passion in music, it just makes me super proud and happy,” Jarvis said.
Lackey says for trick-or-treat next week, he’ll be dressing as the founder of the state of Georgia, James Oglethorpe.
