Akana Tees Off At Sony Open In Hawaii

HONOLULU – University of Hawai’i golfer Blaze Akana will make his second appearance in the PGA’s Sony Open in Hawai’i which runs Thursday, Jan. 11 through Sunday, Jan. 14 at Wai’alae Country Club. The Rainbow Warrior senior is competing in the tournament for the second consecutive year after winning a local qualifier for Hawai’i’s top amateurs last November, where he carded a 66 at Wai’alae.

Akana is scheduled to tee off Round 1 at 1:40 p.m. with Norman Xiong and Jimmy Stanger. The group will tee off Round 2 at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.

The Honolulu native competed in his first Sony Open last year after winning the same local qualifier. Akana carded rounds of 71 and 72 but missed the cut. The Kamehameha Schools-Kapālama alum was the first UH golfer to compete in the Sony Open since David Saka in 2011. TJ Kua also competed in the tournament in 2010.

Akana, who is also the first Rainbow Warrior to compete in two PGA Tournaments, will be looking to become the first UH golfer to make the cut at a professional event.

Akana currently leads the Rainbow Warriors with a 70.67 scoring average this season, shooting under par in five of 12 rounds including three in the 60s. The spring schedule begins Feb. 8-10 with the Amer Ari Intercollegiate in Waimea, Hawai’i.
