Alex Consani took home the award for model of the year at the Fashion Awards in London on Dec. 2, making her the first transgender model to win the prize.

Fellow model Anok Yai took to X, formerly Twitter, following the event, to share her well-wishes for Consani after her win — but to also tell the British Fashion Council, the governing body behind the awards, that she’s tired.

“Alex, I love you and I’m so proud of you. British Fashion Council, thank you but I don’t want it anymore,” Yai wrote.

She followed it up with a second post, writing, “If you have seen the effort that I’ve seen Alex put in; you would understand how proud I am of her. But Alex can be proud and I can be exhausted at the same time. It doesn’t take away how much love we have for each other.”

Consani and Yai were both nominated for the award, as were Alva Claire, Amelia Gray, Liu Wen and Mona Tougaard. Yai was also nominated last year, but Paloma Elsesser won.

According to the British Fashion Council, the model of the year award “recognises the global impact of a model who over the last 12 months has dominated the industry.”

The awarded model also must have an “influence that transcends the catwalk,” and make “an outstanding contribution to the industry, garnering numerous editorial and advertising campaigns throughout the year.”

In her acceptance speech, Consani, 21, honored Black transgender models who gave her the space to be successful in this industry, including Connie Fleming and Aaron Rose Philip. She also said she believed her win was a step in the “right direction” for inclusivity in modeling.

“Now, more than ever, it’s an important conversation that should be had about how to truly support and uplift one another within this industry, especially those who have been made to feel insignificant,” she said. “Because change is more than possible — it’s needed.”

This year alone, Consani became one of the first trans models to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (alongside Valentina Sampaio) and recently appeared on the cover of Teen Vogue. She also modeled for a number of high-fashion labels, including Chanel, Jacquemus, Marc Jacobs, Simone Rocha and many more.

Yai, 26, has been similarly booked and busy this year, also walking in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, as well as modeling for labels like Versace, Bottega Veneta, Marc Jacobs and more. She also recently covered Elle’s Future of Fashion Issue.
