As he kicks off his last concert arena tour, Pop Superstar Barry Manilow is giving one local music teacher a chance to win new band instruments ahead of his stop in Pittsburgh. Local high school students in each of the city’s Manilow will stop in were able to submit the names of their favorite music teachers, nominating them to win $5,000 in new band instruments for the high school band and another $5,000 presented directly to the educator.The award comes from the Manilow Music Project, which “establishes scholarships at music programs all over the country to help young musicians gain access to top-notch education,” according to the project’s official website. “It is wonderful to partner with our concert venues to identify schools and music teachers in their neighborhoods that deserve this small token of my gratitude,” Manilow said in a statement. “Many school music programs have either been terminated, or their funds have been severely depleted. I always want to do my part through The Manilow Music Project to keep music in schools.”The winner will also receive VIP tickets to the concert on May 23 at PPG Paints Arena.Twelve local teachers have been nominated.
