Cal’s Aidan Li Wins On Pommel Horse

BERKELEY – California men’s gymnastics opened its 2025 season Monday night with a home showdown against reigning national champion Stanford, posting a team score of 303.950 to the Cardinal’s nation-leading total of 318.450. It was each team’s first experience with the NCAA’s new scoring system, which requires only eight skills instead of 10 per routine, as well as the introduction of four-man lineups.

The Golden Bears out-scored Stanford, 52.250-51.600, on pommel horse, with anchor man and Canadian Champion Aidan Li picking up right where he left off with a winning score of 13.850. Senior Tyler Shimizu also acquitted himself well in his lone event of the night, notching a 13.550 that also bested each member of the opposing lineup.

Three freshmen – Matteo Bardana, Trigg Dudley and Troy Nuesca – made their collegiate debuts Monday, with Bardana appearing on floor, rings and parallel bars. The Oakville, Ontario, native posted a standout floor score of 13.650, complete with a stick, to lead the team; he also stuck his dismount on rings.

Junior Theodor Roald Gadderud, who was named team MVP in 2024, led the Bears on high bar (13.050), parallel bars (13.050) and rings (12.900). Classmate Khalen Curry took Cal’s top score on vault (13.600).

Stanford’s Colt Walker and Taylor Burkhart tied with a total of 80.400 in the all-around, while Walker also claimed victories on floor (14.100) and vault (13.950); meanwhile, Brandon Nguyen claimed the top scores on parallel bars (13.850) and high bar (13.700). Olympic bronze medalist Asher Hong earned the top score on rings with a 13.800.
