Last year, loafers took centre stage in the fashion world, endorsed by It-girls like Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, and on the Gucci and Miu Miu runways at Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks. Loafers are still big news for 2024, but this time around, they’re red. A “pop of red” (a draped sweater here, a trophy bag there) emerged as something of a street-style theme in 2023, and a red loafer is an excellent way to infuse a hit of colour into any ensemble. Emma Stone’s latest outing proves the Oscar nominee is on board with the burgeoning shoe trend.

For an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in New York, the star of Poor Things paired her cherry-red loafers – from every minimalist celebrity’s favourite luxury brand, The Row – with navy pleated trousers with a sleek, drainpipe silhouette. Stone completed the look with a simple beige crew-neck sweater and a delicate gold chain necklace. Emma’s fashion formula here is straightforward: make the outfit clean and timeless, but add a touch of red to keep things current.

The fashion crowd has also been embracing the red loafer, however some street-stylers take a more maximalist styling approach than Emma. Some pair their colour pop loafers with bold checks and colourful prints, subscribing to a “more is more” fashion philosophy. Regardless of the approach, red loafers are versatile enough to be a wise wardrobe investment this spring.
