SAN JOSE, Calif. — Columbia fencing produced a number of top finishes at January’s North American Cups, highlighted by six Lions earning seven medals at the event held from January 5-8. First-year Samarth Kumbla won gold in the junior men’s foil competition and bronze in senior men’s foil to highlight the weekend’s performances. In total, Columbia had 41 representatives, including alumni, and picked up 26 top-32 finishes.
 
After a tough, 15-12, victory in the round of 128, Kumbla rolled in his next six bouts, holding his opponent to single-figure touche. In the championship matchup, Kumbla knocked off Daniel Zhang, 15-14, to claim the gold.
 
Zander Rhodes picked up silver in division I women’s foil. In Division I men’s foil. Kumbla tied with teammate Bogdan Hamilton for the bronze medal and Tierna Oxenreider placed third in junior women’s epee.
 
For Columbia’s alumni, 2023 NCAA Champion Nora Burke ’23CC placed third in division I women’s sabre and Andrew Doddo ’21CC also took home a bronze medal.
 
Columbia resumes collegiate action at the Penn State Invitational on Sunday, January 14 in University Park, Pennsylvania.
