Maya Unterman, a fourth-year psychology major, found her interest in bartending through her position serving wine at campus events. Although her job was not acquired through Cal State Fullerton, there are plenty of outside-the-box opportunities on campus to take advantage of for every student.
It is an overstatement that students pursue jobs on campus because of the schedule, flexibility and convenient location university jobs can offer its students. Out of the many student employment opportunities offered at CSUF, here are a few unique positions to look into.
-
Art Model
The art department is not only home to the most creative Titans on campus, but also arguably some of the most unique jobs. Art students know that as courses become higher level, projects start to move away from still lifes of simple fruits and geometric shapes to more complex still lifes of the human anatomy. To provide the most authentic experience, art models are hired to stand, sometimes nude, and stay still for hour-long periods during painting and drawing classes. Students can inquire about art modeling positions by checking the Student Internal Career Opportunities Portal or contacting the art department directly.
-
Catering
Catering services for events on campus are provided by third-party companies most of the time. Catering positions involve bartending, cooking or serving all while providing customer service to guests. Unterman shared that because CSUF employs the catering company she works for, she has been able to work events on campus during fundraisers, sporting events and occasionally alumni events. Even though catering positions might not be offered directly through the Student Internal Career Opportunity Portal, culinary-inclined Titans might be interested in networking with CSU-approved catering companies to learn more about these opportunities.
-
The Children’s Center
For Titans interested in working with children, looking to the Children’s Center for opportunities might provide a unique job experience. The Children’s Center offers childcare among other services for student parents and faculty with young children. Aside from making equal access to education possible for student parents, the Children’s Center offers internship positions to child & academic studies, psychology and human services majors. Working with children requires a lot of dedication and patience but it can also provide a fruitful learning experience. To apply and for information on application requirements and deadlines, students can contact the Children’s Center.

The Student Genius Center
The Student Genius Center, located on the first floor of Pollak Library North, offers student assistant roles open to all majors. With direction from the IT staff, student assistants provide technical support for campus-related technical issues. Students interested in technology tend to look for roles at the Student Genius Center because students can gain knowledge by troubleshooting problems and helping people at the same time.
-
Graduate Assistants
Although these roles are only offered to graduate students, it is worth noting that these unique roles offer a wealth of experience in specific programs of choice. Graduate students receive direct emails from their respective departments, generally graduate-level departments, with offers for program assistant roles. These program assistant roles offer diverse experiences, from research roles to lab positions.
