Hawaii-born actor to play title role in new Apple TV Plus series ‘Sunny’

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Hawaii-born actor is set to star in a new Apple TV series called “Sunny,” but you won’t actually see her face.

Iolani School graduate Joanna Sotomura plays the title role of the 3-foot-tall robot named Sunny.

The series, which was filmed in Japan, focuses on the character Suzie Sakamoto — played by Rashida Jones — whose husband and son disappear in a plane crash.

Her husband’s electronics company gifts her with Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots.

Sotomura — who has also starred in “Emma Approved,” “Madison County” and “Everything Before Us” — told Midweek that her facial expressions were tracked and puppeteers were used to mimic her arm movements for the character.

“Sunny” premieres next Wednesday, July 10 on Apple TV.
