One person died and several were trapped under the rubble of a hotel that collapsed in a tourist town on the banks of the river Moselle.

Of the eight who were trapped, two women, one man and a two-year-old child have been rescued, according to German news agency DPA.

Emergency services said a body has been located but could not yet be recovered.

Investigators believe 14 people were in the building in the winemaking town of Kroev when the upper floor caved in at around 11pm on Tuesday evening, five of whom were able to escape without injury.
