PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (0-2, 0-0 Ivy League) kick off the first leg of the 2025 Ocean State Cup at Stevenson-Pincince Field against the Providence College Friars (2-1, 0-0 Big East) on Saturday. Tomorrow’s game is scheduled to begin at noon and will stream on ESPN+.
 
SCOUTING THE BEARS

  • Brown enters Saturday after opening the season with a home loss to Fairfield before a hard-fought 8-7 loss at Boston University on Tuesday.
  • Brown’s offense averages six goals per game with Ben Scandone leading the squad with three goals. Marcus Wertheim, Luke Dellicicchi, and Aidan McLane each have a pair of goals through two games.
  • Brown’s man-up offense went 1-for-3 against Fairfield before being kept off the field against the Terriers.
  • The Bears hold a .740 clear percentage and a .755 opponent clear percentage.
  • Defensively, the Bears allow 9.50 goals per game to rank second in the conference and 26th nationally.
  • Goalie Connor Foley holds a .596 save percentage and 9.62 goals against average in two starts.
  • Faceoff specialist Dash Sachs is 15-for-28 (.536) through two games with six ground balls.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS

  • The Friars enter the weekend with a 2-1 record in 2025 after opening the season with wins over Holy Cross (15-8) and Bryant (15-12). Most recently, PC dropped a 12-10 final to Harvard.
  • PC’s offense averages 13.33 goals per game to rank 16th nationally. Richie Joseph leads the Friars with 14 goals and 18 points through three games.
  • Joseph’s 4.67 goals per game rank fifth nationally and his 6.00 points per game rank seventh. Ryan Bell leads the team with 16 assists and his 5.33 assists per game ranks second in the NCAA.
  • PC’s man-up offense has four goals in 12 attempts (.333) to rank 39th nationally.
  • PC holds a .761 clear percentage and a .831 opponent clear percentage.
  • Defensively, the Friars allow 10.67 goals per game to rank 42nd in the NCAA.
  • Goalie Dan Donahue has started all three games and enters Saturday with a .554 save percentage and 10.07 goals against average.
  • The man-down defense has allowed two goals in five attempts.
  • The Friars rank 13th nationally with a .605 win-rate at the faceoff X. Quinn McConnaughey ranks seventh in the nation with a .657 win-rate (46-70) and his 7.00 ground balls per game is good for 15th nationally.

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • Saturday marks the 29th meeting between Brown and Providence College dating back to 1989.
  • The Bears hold a 25-3 all-time record against the Friars but look to rebound after an overtime loss in 2024.
  • Brown is 14-2 all-time against the Friars on College Hill. PC has never won consecutive games against Brown.

OCEAN STATE CUP

  • The Bears look to capture the Ocean State Cup for the first time since 2022 this season.
  • Brown will square off against Providence College next weekend in the first leg of the in-state rivalry before taking on Bryant on March 4.
  • The Friars took a win over Bryant already this season and can capture the Ocean State Cup for the first time since 2020 and third time overall with a win over the Bears. 

FOLEY STANDS TALL

  • Sophomore goalie Connor Foley has been stellar to start the season and most recently recorded 18 saves in Brown’s 8-7 loss at Boston University.
  • Through two games, Foley holds a .596 save percentage and 9.62 goals against average.
  • His save percentage ranks second in the Ivy League and 16th nationally through the early part of the season.

LET IT FLY

  • Foley scored the first goalie goal in nearly 10 years for the Bears against the Terriers.
  • Jack Kelly ’16 was the last Brown goalie to find twine. He scored on March 29, 2016 in a 19-8 road win at Villanova.
  • Kelly added an assist that season and finished his Brown career with two points.

AT X

  • Senior Dash Sachs ranks third in the Ivy League with a .536 win-rate at the faceoff X (15-28) through two games.
