MERIDEN, CT (WFSB) – A Meriden man was arrested for his involvement in an auto theft back in 2023 in Ellington Thursday.
State police say that at around 9:11 A.M. on May 29th, 2023, a trooper for Troop C responded to a residence in Ellington on a report that a vehicle was stolen from a driveway.
Investigators wee unable to get any information regarding the location of the vehicle, which was a 2020 Subaru Legacy.
On August 1st, 2023, the vehicle was located in New Britain by officers in the area.
DNA evidence was then collected from inside the vehicle for the investigation. It connected the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Eduardo Mercado, to the incident.
As an additional step, the trooper also completed a search warrant to get a sample of Mercado’s DNA. It was found that he was incarcerated at the New Haven Correctional Center.
Results of the examination confirmed that the DNA sample from Mercado matched the one found inside the car.
After an arrest warrant was issued for Mercado, it was found that he was no longer in custody at the New Haven Correctional Center.
On Thursday, the trooper was able to take him into custody with Meriden police assistance.
He is charged with larceny of a motor vehicle. His bond is set at $50,000 and he was arraigned in Rockville Superior Court on Friday.
