What is … Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans? No, seriously, what is it? That question stumped not one, but three Jeopardy! contestants on last night’s show, all of whom failed to recognize the basic premise of the film that could win the Oscar for Best Picture. The category was “summing up the Spielberg movie,” and the clue read, “Young cinema lover Sammy represents cinema lover Steven Spielberg,” describing the director’s 2022 movie that has been a major contender in the awards race. The first player to ring in wrongly guessed Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, while the second was even more incorrect, guessing 1999’s 8mm — you know, the crime-thriller about snuff films? To be fair, this episode would have been shot months ago, so perhaps the players would recognize The Fabelmans now after its Golden Globe wins. But Us Weekly’s Mara Reinstein tweeted after the triple stumper, “I’m starting to think only critics saw it.” Sounds like a Best Picture Oscar winner to us!
