WESTLAKE, La. (KPLC) – The holiday season is supposed to be an enjoyable time of the year, but for some who can’t celebrate with their loved ones, it can be the toughest time of the year, as well.
That’s why Phillips 66 and Calcasieu Council on Aging partnered to spread holiday cheer to elderly residents.
“Seniors who have no family, their alone, their widowed, their children may be out of town and unable to travel to them this holiday season. So, this is our way to make sure someone says ‘Happy Thanksgiving’ to them,” said Executive Director of the Calcasieu Council on Aging Jacqueline Green.
Over 350 food baskets were delivered to homebound senior citizens in Lake Charles, Iowa, Starks and more.
This was the 18th year that Phillips 66 partnered with the Calcasieu Council on Aging.
For some of the seniors, isolation is big problem.
“A lot of our seniors in our region are lonesome and a lot of those that are on our list live alone, so I think this is just a perfect opportunity while we’re in the spirit of Thanksgiving and giving back to the community to brighten their spirits,” Phillips 66 Gulf Coast Public Affairs Director Megan Hartman said.
Hundreds of volunteers, along with T.S Cooley elementary beta club students, spent the morning dropping these kits off to residents.
Green encourages everyone to reach out to people in need, especially during this time of year.
“As we go through this holiday season think about the person that is less fortunate than you are. Think about a neighbor, church member, or a community member who you haven’t seen in a while as they age, they need our love and support. So, take a few minutes to bless them and encourage them this holiday season,” said Green.
The council hopes that they can continue to reach more seniors in the years to come.
