WOODWAY, Texas (KWTX) – The bicycle lanes on Estates Dr. completed construction.

The Woodway City Council approved the Shared Path Project in Dec. 2023, initiating significant changes to Estates Drive. The renovations converted one lane into a biking and walking lane, while another lane was transformed into a turning lane.

The Waco Bicycle Club appeared before the Woodway City Council to argue in favor of the lanes. Club president, Mark Remson said the new biking and walking lane made him feel safer traveling down Estates Dr.

“I’ve walked up and down them a few times and definitely had a lot more feeling of safety,” Remson said.

Woodway City Councilmember Davis Russell and Councilmember Davis Keyston said they don’t see many people using the new bike lanes. Instead, they’d rather see sidewalks connect surrounding neighborhoods for bicycle riders.

“It was almost half a million dollars to do this,” Russell said. “That same money could’ve been spent on a sidewalk from Fairway to Acorn. That would’ve got the walkers in bikers where they could use that area and got them into the quiet neighborhood and it wouldn’t affect the traffic.”

Remson enjoys the access to the town the lanes provide to bike riders. He said he doesn’t mind any increased traffic to Estates Dr. that may result in the streets reduction from four lanes to two.

“Before we would’ve bicycled down the side of the road,” Remson said. “Having a dedicated lane where we’ve got the markers set up and there’s quite a bit of separation between us and the cars. So I think it’s definitely safer. Safer for kids on bicycles and safer for everybody walking.”
