Scrolling through Netflix to find a movie to watch can take so long you won’t actually have time to watch one. That’s why I keep track of what’s getting the most views and buzz on the streaming service every week and put together a list of picks for you. I keep tabs on multiple metrics like popularity, ratings on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, and my Letterboxd watchlist to surface four recommended flicks every week. Given that this Sunday is Father’s Day, here are four great movies about fatherhood.
Fatherhood
Kevin Hart stars in Fatherhood, based on the devastating true story of Matthew Logelin, whose wife Liz died in the hospital just one day after giving birth to their first child, a daughter named Maddy. Determined to raise Maddy as a single father, Matt is thrown headfirst into the complexities of parenthood in all its forms, but as Maddy grows up and begins to realize her mother’s absence, things become more emotionally complex. This is a rich and charming film that really makes you think about parenthood and what dads do.
Nobody 2
You know what else dads sometimes have to do? Kick ass. Bob Odenkirk returns in Nobody 2 as suburban father Hutch Mansell, once more forced to be a killer for hire to pay off his debts. When the grind gets to be too much, Hutch takes his family on vacation to a Wisconsin amusement park he visited as a child. Unfortunately, things escalate after the corrupt local sheriff gets involved. It’s a goofy, violent, and entertaining picture.
Dog Gone
Nothing unites a dad and a son like a difficult task, and Dog Gone (based on a true story),\ is a real epic. When Fielding Marshall moves back home after college, his closest companion is his beloved dog, Gonker. But when Gonker takes off after a fox while they’re hiking the Appalachian Trail and doesn’t come back, Fielding is devastated. His father, John, steps up to help him find the dog, and the duo bonds during their epic search.
Ultraman: Rising
Raising a kid is tough enough on a normal day, but what if your little one will eventually grow up to be a city-destroying monster? In Ultraman: Rising, baseball player Ken Sato returns to Japan to take on the mantle of Ultraman, who defends the planet from a range of annoying extraterrestrials. When a mysterious egg hatches during a mission and the baby imprints on Ken, he’s thrust into the role of parenting a newborn Gigantron. Now he needs to manage his relationship with his father, the previous Ultraman, and keep the creature safe from people who want to exploit it.
