The speed limit is set to be reduced on two roads as a council has said it aims to make a part of a county “safer for all”.

Dorset Council confirmed the speed limit along New Road and Christchurch Road in Ferndown and West Parley will be reduced from 40mph to 30.

Signage work will begin on Monday with the new limit coming into effect on Friday 17 July.

Councillor Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services said: “The new speed limit represents a significant step forward in enhancing road safety in the area.”

The changes come following a public consultation where the council said residents voiced strong support for the speed limit reductions.

The A347 New Road will see a 30mph limit from Parley Cross to the A348 Ringwood Road and from Ensbury Bridge to Parley Cross.

The B3073 Christchurch Road will have a 30mph speed limit starting west of the junction with Barrack Road and Christchurch Road, extending westwards through Parley Cross junction to link with the existing 30mph limit close to Dudsbury Golf Course.

“The aim is to make the area safer for all, whether crossing the road, walking or cycling. Please take extra care as the changes are introduced,” said Andrews.

“This change is part of our wider plan to improve New Road, including better crossings and junctions, and I thank everyone for your continued patience and support.”

The council added that the lower speed limit is being introduced ahead of work planned for 2027 at the northern section of New Road.

It said that will include improved pedestrian crossing points and minor junction alterations at Dudsbury Avenue and Chander Close.

The council said the work will take place alongside other road maintenance work to minimise disruption.
