As part of our Week of Languages celebrations, Senior School pupils enjoyed a fascinating lunchtime session led by Sixth Former Constantinos Tsang, who shared his experiences of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. Pupils learned about the rich traditions, symbolism and mythology behind this important cultural celebration, including the stories associated with the moon and the significance of the festival’s colourful lanterns. The session provided a wonderful opportunity for pupils to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and hear first-hand about a tradition that is celebrated by millions around the world.

A World of Creativity

Pupils put their artistic talents to the test in a creative coaster design challenge. The activity began with an engaging quiz featuring fascinating facts from countries across the globe, helping to inspire ideas and spark curiosity about different cultures. Armed with their newfound knowledge, pupils designed their own coasters, producing a fantastic range of imaginative and beautifully crafted creations. The challenge highlighted not only pupils’ creativity but also their enthusiasm for learning about the wider world.

An International Scavenger Hunt

Year 7 and 8 pupils embraced the spirit of Week of Languages with a lively scavenger hunt around the school. Their mission was to find postcards displaying greetings from different countries and languages around the world. With plenty of determination, teamwork and healthy competition, pupils raced around campus searching for as many greetings as possible. The activity transformed language learning into an exciting adventure and encouraged pupils to appreciate the diversity of languages spoken across the globe.

Baking for a Good Cause

One of the week’s tastiest highlights was the MFL Bake Off. Pupils rose to the challenge by creating a variety of internationally inspired baked treats, showcasing flavours and traditions from different cultures. The impressive entries combined baking skills with creativity and cultural exploration, while the sale of the finished creations raised valuable funds for the Trussell Trust Foodbank. A huge thank you goes to everyone who took part and supported the initiative.

Dancing Through Language and Culture

Year 9 pupils enjoyed a vibrant lunchtime Zumba session, bringing an energetic Latin-inspired dimension to the week’s celebrations. With a specialist dance teacher joining for the occasion and the autumn sunshine providing the perfect backdrop, pupils enthusiastically embraced the rhythms and movements of Latin dance. The session demonstrated how language learning can extend far beyond the classroom, connecting pupils with culture through music and movement.

Discovering Mandarin

Pupils from Years 7 to 11 came together for a special lunchtime session led by Naiqi and Owen, who shared their knowledge of Mandarin and Chinese culture. Attendees learned more about the language, its unique characteristics and the traditions associated with Chinese culture. It was particularly rewarding to see pupils of different ages united by a shared interest in languages and cultural discovery.

Celebrating Tamil Language and Culture

Another highlight of the week was a fascinating presentation on Tamil delivered by Shaji. Open to pupils of all ages, the session provided a wonderful insight into one of the world’s oldest living languages and the rich culture associated with it. Shaji’s passion and enthusiasm made the presentation both informative and engaging, inspiring pupils to broaden their understanding of global languages and traditions.
