It’s not hard to see that the gap between the rich and the rest of us is bigger than it’s ever been, and movies are reflecting that reality. The Chris Evans vehicle Sacrifice is doing well on the Netflix charts this week and getting solid buzz. If it gets you in the mood to see more elites getting their comeuppance, I’ve got some suggestions for what to watch next.
Sacrifice
You can learn a lot about a society from the entertainment it chooses, and there’s definitely been a trend in recent years in movies and TV shows where elites get their comeuppance. Sacrifice is a Netflix original movie starring Chris Evans as an actor working on his comeback who gets abducted by an environmental group led by Anya Taylor-Joy. They believe the apocalypse can only be stopped if they throw him into a volcano. It’s not particularly subtle, but you’ll have a good time with it.
Triangle of Sadness
Triangle Of Sadness is a relentless satire of power and privilege. When a luxury yacht cruise hits a storm and is subsequently sunk by pirates, the survivors wash up on a deserted island only to discover that the only one of them with survival skills is Abigail, the ship’s “toilet manager.” With their hierarchy upended, the ship’s passengers must adapt to a world where their money and fame no longer have any value. This one takes no prisoners.
Windfall
For some class struggle on a more intimate canvas, 2022’s Windfall is worth a watch. Jason Segel stars as a nameless man who breaks into a tech billionaire’s house, but is surprised when the man and his wife (played by Jesse Plemons and Lily Collins) unexpectedly return. He ties them up and holds them hostage, eventually demanding a $500,000 ransom. Things get awkward when they figure out his real reason for being there, and all three parties turn against each other as secrets come to light.

The White Tiger
India is a country that’s no stranger to class struggle, and 2021’s The White Tiger plops us right in the thick of it. When ambitious Balram gets a job as a chauffeur for the landlord who destroys his family, he quickly learns how the rich think the poor are disposable. After he’s forced to take the blame for a traffic accident he didn’t cause, Balram begins plotting against his employers, and things quickly escalate beyond the point of no return.
