XRP holders sitting on thousands of dollars worth of tokens keep asking the same question: why does their crypto earn nothing while other blockchains reward holders just for participating? The answer reveals a fundamental design choice that shapes every yield…

XRP holders (CRYPTO:XRP) cannot stake their tokens because the XRP Ledger lacks a staking system. This means 10,000 XRP might sit idle, earning no rewards, while proof-of-stake holders benefit from rewards just for locking up their assets.
XRP is now priced at $1.32, making 10,000 XRP worth approximately $13,200. Leaving such an amount inactive feels unproductive, leaving many holders wondering whether they can earn something without selling their coins.
This topic comes up frequently in cryptocurrency discussions. One user on Reddit pointed out succinctly that “the XRP blockchain is not a proof-of-stake blockchain, so proper staking is not possible. All you can do is lend out the coins for interest.”
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Holding | 10,000 XRP |
| Value at $1.32 | $13,200 |
| XRP’s one-year price change | Down about 50% |
| Core decision | Chase yield or leave the coins alone |
The XRP Ledger Doesn’t Offer Staking Rewards
Unlike proof-of-stake blockchains, the XRP Ledger uses a consensus model in which a group of validators agrees on the order of transactions every few seconds. Validators don’t need to lock up coins to participate, and because transaction fees are destroyed, holders have no reward pool to draw from.
As a result, any potential earnings on XRP require giving your coins to someone else—be it an exchange, a lender, or a smart contract. This increases a holder’s exposure, as they face the risk of both XRP’s price fluctuations and the reliability of the party holding the coins.
One Bad Month for XRP Can Erase Eight Years of CD Interest
A single bad month can offset any potential earnings from holding XRP. A typical 12-month certificate of deposit (CD) pays around 1.8%, or about $238 a year on $13,200, and a 10-year Treasury yields about 5%, or about $660.
In contrast, XRP’s price is much more volatile. For instance, the coin dropped roughly 13% over 30 days, decreasing the value of 10,000 XRP by about $1,965. That single month wiped out more than eight years of average CD interest.
On the upside, XRP’s price can rise, too. For example, over the past 90 days, XRP gained about 23%. Additionally, any yield earned on XRP is also paid in XRP. If you earn a 1% yield, you’d earn 100 XRP over a year, which is about $132 at $1.32. However, if the price drops, the dollar value of those rewards will drop too.
Four Ways to Earn Yield on XRP and Their Associated Risks
Rates for the following options can fluctuate frequently, and no platform offers guarantees. Here’s a look at four ways to earn yield on XRP:
- XRP Ledger AMM pools. Holders can deposit XRP into an automated market maker (AMM) pool, alongside another token. This lets depositors earn a share of trading fees while keeping access to their private keys. However, this method carries the risk of impermanent loss, where significant price changes can leave you with fewer assets than if you had held the coins.
- Exchange earn programs. This option is straightforward; holders can click a button and earn a variable rate from their exchange. However, the exchange controls the coins, and crypto deposits are not insured by the FDIC or SIPC. If the platform fails, depositors could end up competing with other creditors for their funds.
- Lending platforms. These platforms allow holders to lend their XRP to borrowers in exchange for interest. This carries dual risks; a borrower may default, and lending platforms may freeze withdrawals, as several crypto lenders did in 2022 during the last bear market.
- Wrapped XRP. This token on another blockchain represents XRP held elsewhere, letting holders use it in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. However, this adds risks, including bridge and smart contract vulnerabilities, as hackers frequently target cross-chain bridges.
We find that AMM pools usually offer the best balance for holders seeking yield because the depositor retains custodianship. Wrapped XRP, on the other hand, adds layers of risk for minimal extra return.
Can You Stake XRP, and What Could 10,000 XRP Earn Instead?
In summary, XRP holders cannot stake their coins because the XRP Ledger has no staking system. Any options marketed as “XRP staking” involve lending, liquidity provision, or wrapped tokens under different names. The first crucial factor to assess is custody—who controls your coins? When a product takes that control away, you must weigh the potential yield against the risk of losing your investment.
For instance, a 5% yield on $13,200 could bring in about $660 a year, which is significantly less than what you could lose if a platform collapses. Only amounts a holder can afford to lose should be placed in yield-generating products.
One Reddit post claimed a yield farm’s “APY will easily be 25%+,” but such high rates often come with heightened risks for the holder. After XRP’s 50% drop over the past year, understanding who holds custody may impact your results more than the yield.
