In early October 2025, the Department of Music opened its newly renovated Music Technology Lab in Morrison Center C115. Students and faculty from across campus gathered during Homecoming to celebrate and try out the new space.
The lab contains Mac computers with industry-standard music production software installed. Each computer is attached to a piano keyboard and high-quality headphones so students can practice their skills and produce their own music.
The Music Technology Lab is connected to an adjacent recording studio, which features professional-grade microphones and a two-way audio connection that lets recording artists work directly with sound engineers in the lab.
At an open house on Thursday, Oct. 10, Assistant Teaching Professor Logan Frewen led a demonstration with vocalist Mattew Ramirez, who is earning a BA in Music. The pair showed off the space’s recording and editing capabilities in real-time as they recorded Ramirez’s song, Close.
The new space represents an expansion of the traditional music curriculum at Boise State, which has historically focused on Classical and Jazz performance and education.
Professor Nicole Molumby has led the effort to create a new Bachelor of Arts in Music curriculum that supports careers in music production, talent management and more. “These new students might be in a local rock band or working on commercial music, but they are all welcome here,” she said. “We’re expanding our reach to all those who consider themselves musicians on campus.”
The new Music Technology Lab and all its tools are available to all students — not just music majors. There are scheduled open lab hours each week. Students interested in using the recording facilities should contact Frewen at musicproduction@boisestate.edu to book time.
The renovation to the Music Technology Lab was made possible by a grant from the College of Arts and Sciences Innovation Lab. Innovation Lab grants support new ways of organizing curriculum in the arts, sciences and humanities to better prepare students for the careers of the future.
