POLITICS WASN’T ALWAYS THIS WAY 🇺🇸❤️
In 2008, less than a month before the election, Sen. John McCain took a political risk to defend his opponent, then-Sen. Barack Obama, against a racist attack by one of HIS own supporters 🥺

During a town hall in Lakeland, Minnesota, a woman told McCain she couldn’t “trust” Obama because he was “an Arab” — latching on to the conspiracy theory being spread at the time, in part, by then-reality star Donald Trump!

McCain wouldn’t have ANY part in that.

“No ma’am, he’s a decent family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what this campaign is all about,” the Senator and American war hero said to applause.

The Washington Post later named that exchange as one of McCain’s most courageous political moments.

🎥: The Washington Post | Christina Lorey
