Britain’s Got Talent judge and BAFTA nominee Amanda Holden shared the horrifying supermarket encounter she suffered alongside husband Chris Hughes on her Heart FM Breakfast Show

TV and radio personality Amanda Holden was discussing the peculiar situations that arise from cases of mistaken identity with her Heart FM Breakfast Show audience on Friday, alongside co-host Jamie Theakston.

A listener contacted the programme to recount how hotel staff in Paris had confused him with Olly Murs, due to sharing the pop star’s surname. He was subsequently given access to the singer’s lavish suite for “the best four hours of my life”, until The X Factor star eventually turned up to claim the accommodation.

Another listener called Gemma also got in touch to relay her own encounter, saying: “Not exactly mistaken identity, but I pinched the bottom of a man at a festival that I thought was my husband. Turns out he was just a random man in the same cap, he found it funny!”

Gemma’s anecdote prompted Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda to recall a comparable incident involving her husband, Chris Hughes, when a woman in a supermarket spotted him browsing the fridge and mistook him for her partner.

The mother-of-two disclosed: “That also happened to my poor husband Chris. We were in Tesco doing our food shop, he was wearing his North Face puffer jacket, and he was looking in the fridge in Tesco.

“And this woman just came up to him and coughed in his back, just went [cough], like used his back as a… and he turned around and she just went, ‘oh my God, I thought you were my husband!’

“And we were both so grossed out, it was the most disgusting thing ever,” to which Jamie exclaimed: “Oh I can imagine, why would she even do that to her husband?”

Amanda admitted: “I don’t know, I don’t know, but anyway, that [coat] went to the dry cleaners!”

The star is gearing up for a hectic weekend, as she’s due to return to her judging role for the third live semi-final of Britain’s Got Talent on Saturday evening, before heading to the BAFTA Television Awards with Alan Carr on Sunday afternoon.

Alan and Amanda are jointly shortlisted for best entertainment performance for their BBC series, Amanda and Alan’s Spanish Job. Amanda spoke about her plans with Jamie on Friday morning, confessing that she remained clueless about what to wear for both BGT and The BAFTAs.

After Jamie wished her and Alan the best of luck, Amanda said: “That’s very kind, I’m just thrilled to be going, to be honest, and nominated.

“I don’t know what I’m wearing for either, so when I go home today I have a massive fitting for The BAFTAs, and for my live Britain’s Got Talent show tomorrow.

“People ask me, ‘ooh what are you wearing?’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t know’, and I think people think it’s like a closely guarded secret, but I literally have no clue what I’m wearing!”
