As much as we all hope to cultivate an individual style above fast fashion cycles, the changing of the calendar brings forth a new rotation of what’s considered “in.”
Like clockwork, the sales racks—in-person and online—will overflow with the latest trends, despite your efforts to tune out influencers commanding you to “run to your nearest mall ASAP!”
Some stand-out trends last year included mock-neck sweatshirts, ballet flats, sequins, mini trench coats, a shift from Nike Techs to quarter-zips, and more. Most trends are re-circulations of patterns or cuts from previous decades, but it’s still a gamble: who possibly could have predicted Labubus?
I’m no expert, but in honor of the new year, here are five of my fashion trend predictions:
Fringe, Fringe, Fringe
Two years ago, “coastal granddaughter” was all the rage. Last year, “coastal cowgirl” started circulating online just in time for summer. The central qualities of this aesthetic included cowboy boots and bikinis, barrel jeans, and an overall boho-revival.
Toward the end of spring, right in time for Coachella, there will be a shift away from “coastal” and more of an emphasis on the “cowgirl” aspect. In 2026, a soft-country-inspired style would incorporate more suede textures and free-flowing fashion—hence the fringe prediction.
Picture this: cropped suede fringe jackets paired with a matching fringe mini skirt, like a modern flapper-girl remix. Moccasins. Matching handbags. Fringe on the cuffs of jeans for a twist. Perhaps even hair will follow suit with a rise in fringe bangs?
Ever Heard of Houndstooth?
In the blink of an eye, polka dots blew up last year—from phone cases to formal wear. I think that to distance themselves from the polka-dot pox, brands will shift to a new, mature pattern. Plaid or flannel patterns still feel a bit hipster. 2020 was all about cow print. Stripes never go out of style.
But in 2026, I predict the incorporation of a houndstooth pattern. Houndstooth has a traditional charm to it, sometimes coming across in a business-casual or eloquent Princess Diana manner. That being said, it is more versatile than solely stiff pantsuits—it can feel young, too.
I envision matching houndstooth sets, such as wool coats paired with mini skirts and high-leg boots. Patterned silk neck ties. Houndstooth vests, dresses, and blazers. Houndstooth headbands with chunky sweaters. Slouchy brown houndstooth trousers paired with loafers. You get the picture.
Styling a business-associated pattern into something more stylish is what makes the trend feel fresh. It is classic, of course, but by breaking gender norms or pairing it with modern elements like bright colors and mixed textures, it becomes contemporary.
Call Me Basic, but: Straight-Leg Jeans
Over the years, we’ve seen a stylistic shift away from skinny jeans, toward high-waisted mom jeans, and currently to baggy, low-waisted jeans. Soon, I think people will begin to veer back toward a more structured and figure-flattering fit, without committing yet to a skinny jean revival.
The middle ground, I predict, is a spike in the classic straight leg or rib cage fit. A classic Levi’s 501 is a closet staple, no matter your age or gender. I think a mid-rise straight-leg jean could encourage more experimentation with eye-catching belts and casual heels, without the attention focused on a baggy statement.
Although a ’70s bootcut or flared style could very well be the next big thing, the straight leg look is a simple, everyday staple that pairs nicely with boxy-fit jackets and eye-catching tops.
Colorful Footwear
The 2025 revival of ’60s style Frye boots swept the nation and landed the squared-toe shoe on the frontlines of trendy footwear. Frye boot variations have inspired Gen Z to put their tennis shoes to rest and opt for a dressier look, at least a few days of the week.
I don’t expect this style to disappear in 2026: the wide calf leather boots are here to stay. Building off this “mod” ’60s-inspired wave, I predict that bright colored footwear will become more popular.
“Colorful shoes” is perhaps too broad a statement. Specifically, I think that vibrant, warm tones will rise in popularity to add whimsy to simpler outfits. This potential trend could entail yellow Mary Janes, soft red flats, or pops of pink and green. Adidas Sambas are a beloved commodity, but I think shoe brands like Gola and Reebok may gain more traction (pun intended).
Big, Boxy Sunglasses
Last year, oval-shaped glasses ruled the runway and model-off-duty look. The rounded look was popularized, whether prescription or sunglasses, through the “office siren” trend. Slim frames escaped cubicles and debuted on casual occasions.
This year, I think there will be an emphasis on larger and boxier frames, like square and aviator style sunglasses. In contrast to feminine, thin oval frames, square frames or wired aviators bring in a chic, masculine outline that adds either structure or contrast to an outfit. Tortoise-shell will continue to flourish, alongside shiny silver and gold frames, and occasional cool-toned blue or grey shades.
Of course, sunglasses rarely go out of style—they’re almost always a cheat code to looking cool. However, it can certainly be noted that trend cycles trade off between more feminine or masculine shades.
