As the war in Iran affects gas prices in New Hampshire, summer travel plans are changing along with them.

According to AAA, the price of gas is lower than a month ago but still about $1 more than a year ago, and people heading out on road trips say it’s cutting into their budgets.

Diesel is also more than $1 higher than last year.

Carl Sylvester, owner of Northeast RV Rentals in Northwood, said demand for RVs and trailers hasn’t changed, but towable camper rentals are now up more than RVs.

People are also renting for a shorter amount of time and traveling for shorter distances. He said that instead of going cross-country, renters stay regional. People are also choosing to have them delivered more often rather than picking them up.

While the cost of gas hasn’t affected his bottom line, Sylvester said he sees its effects on others.

“People that would normally take flying trips and expensive vacations, they’ll tone it down and maybe go for a week or two to an RV resort,” he said. “I’ve seen, even when the economy’s down, that there’s always somebody looking for renting a camper RV.”

New Hampshire park officials say there have been about 4% more campers so far this year compared to last year.
