The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.
- Trade talks between Canada and the United States continued on Thursday in Washington. Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc will again meet with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in an attempt to head off another round of steep U.S. tariffs set to take effect on Aug. 19.
- Inflation in the U.S. slowed in July to 3.4 per cent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Wednesday. Last month the consumer price index nudged up 0.1 of a point, in line with analysts’ expectations. Gasoline prices were a large factor as they fell 2.9 per cent in July.
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported export sales of wheat tallied 255,900 tonnes during the week ended Aug. 6. Export sales of U.S. corn included 410,700 of old crop and 924,500 tonnes of new crop. Those for soybeans were 75,100 tonnes of old crop and 1.76 million of new crop.
- The USDA, in its world oilseed report raised its estimate of Canadian canola production for 2026-27. The USDA added 500,000 tonnes to its forecast, now at 22.5 million tonnes. Meanwhile the department cut 2026-27 ending stocks by 400,000 tonnes at 2.43 million.
