Severe thunderstorms ripped through central Pennsylvania Saturday night, disrupting many July 4th events, including the one in the City of Harrisburg, where officials were forced to cancel the fireworks due to the storms.

The city released this official statement:

“Mayor Wanda R. D. Williams has officially canceled tonight’s Fourth of July fireworks display due to severe thunderstorms and high winds moving into the area. The safety of our residents, visitors, and event staff is our highest priority. The fireworks display will be rescheduled to a later announced date at 9:15 p.m. in celebration of America’s semiquincentennial! The City of Harrisburg thanks the community for their understanding and cooperation as we work to keep everyone safe. Updates regarding any future holiday programming or rescheduled events will be posted on the city’s official website at harrisburgpa.gov. Trees were seen covering the roadway where festival attendees were patronizing food trucks and celebrating the holiday.”

CBS 21 was there at Riverfront Park when police began telling people to avoid the trees that had fallen.

Tents were also seen moving from the high winds brought on by the storm. People in attendance described the scene as chaotic, and were seen fleeing holding hands.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 11 p.m.
