Theatre of Hate, The Bolshoi Brothers, Some Days Are Darker
8 p.m. Tuesday, April 7
The Shakedown, 1212 N. State St., Bellingham
These two groups are both veterans of the early ’80s British post-punk/goth scene who are, remarkably, back together and out on tour almost 50 years later. An awful lot of the roots of today’s rock sounds can be traced back to that scene, and these bands were right there helping to define it. They’ll be coming through for a show at the Shakedown on Tuesday, April 7, and it looks like there’s a solid percentage of original members appearing (this can be a problem with long-running groups). The opening act is NYC’s Some Days Are Darker, a great example of the modern-day influence of this sound.
Brian Kirk Sextet: A Tribute to Gary Burton
6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 8
FireHouse Arts and Events Center, 1314 Harris Ave., Bellingham
Brian Kirk is a percussionist and composer based in Seattle. He’ll be playing the vibraphone at his show at the FireHouse on Wednesday, April 8, in a tribute to the legendary vibraphonist Gary Burton. Also, now that the Odd Fellows has a late night jazz show every Wednesday, are people using that as the after-party for the early-evening Wednesday night Jazz Center shows? Because that would make a lot of sense to me.
Ska Island
8 p.m. Friday, April 10
Aslan Depot, 1322 N. State St., Bellingham
Whenever I do one of my columns where I invite readers to ask for local music suggestion, people always ask where they can find live reggae around here. Until recently I didn’t have great answers unless Yogoman was in town, but since the group Ska Island started playing you can actually go out and get your reggae/ska/rocksteady fix on a regular basis, with a full horn section to boot. They’re playing Aslan Depot on Friday, April 10.
Nurhachi
8 p.m. Saturday, July 20
Old Edison, 5829 Cains Court, Bow
Nurhachi pulls off the rare trick of making rock music that doesn’t need any prefix at all to describe it. Its self-titled debut from last year showcases tight instrumental riffs and the melodic gifts of lead singer Jack Mattingly. The lively vibe of the Old Edison makes for a perfect, high-energy night out on Saturday, April 11.
