Let your streaming weekend be full of best actor contenders new and old, with a best spongey dude thrown in for fun.
Netflix, Peacock, Hulu, HBO Max, Paramount+ and more have a plethora of fresh flicks to watch, including a bunch of theatrical releases available to watch at home. Best actor winner Brendan Fraser is back in heartwarming territory in a Japanese-set dramedy, while current Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke turns in one of his best performances as a Broadway legend. Then there’s SpongeBob SquarePants, whose latest movie finds the iconic character venturing to the creepy Underworld with a dastardly phantom pirate. (Don’t worry, parents. It’s “Aargh!”-rated.)
Here are 10 new and notable movies you can stream right now:
‘Blue Moon’

Ethan Hawke snagged a best actor Oscar nomination as famed lyricist Lorenz Hart in this lively character study. Richard Linklater reimagines the 1943 premiere afterparty of “Oklahoma!” where a newly sober Hart tries to keep some semblance of pride obsessing over college-age Elizabeth (Margaret Qualley) and toasting old partner Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott).

‘Dead of Winter’

You’re not prepared for Judy Greer as a murderous villain. Emma Thompson stars in the thriller as a grieving Minnesota widow who travels to a favorite ice fishing spot to spread her husband’s ashes, runs afoul of a desperate, violent couple (Greer and Marc Menchaca) and tries to save the young woman (Laurel Marsden) they kidnapped.
Where to watch: HBO Max
‘Eternity’

After choking on a pretzel, Larry (Miles Teller) ends up in the afterlife and has to choose an eternity. He decides to wait for his wife of 65 years to show up. But when Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) gets there, she’s also greeted by her first husband, Luke (Callum Turner), who’s been waiting since he died in the Korean War in this tweak of the usual love-triangle rom-com.
Where to watch: Apple TV
‘Honey Bunch’

There’s a cool, stylish 1970s horror vibe to this thriller starring Grace Glowicki as a woman who undergoes an experimental treatment to get her memories back after a car accident with her husband (Ben Petrie). But some strange visions she has keys her into the much weirder stuff really happening.
Where to watch: Shudder
‘Joe’s College Road Trip’

Tyler Perry’s Madea movie-verse expands its spotlight from that elderly lady to her equally feisty and inappropriate 82-year-old brother. Joe (Perry), a brusque former pimp who kinda grows on you, goes on a road trip with naive, nerdy grandson B.J. (Jermaine Harris) and they help a young prostitute (Amber Reign), brawl with racists, and deep dive into Black history.

‘Predator: Badlands’

Prepare yourself for an underdog “Predator” tale. Alien warrior Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), the runt of his clan, wants to prove himself worthy and travels to a deadly world to seek out an unkillable beast. Along the way, Dek befriends android Thia (Elle Fanning) in an sci-fi adventure that offers a few “Alien” teases and a scintillating cliffhanger.
Where to watch: Hulu
‘Song Sung Blue’

Kate Hudson definitely earns her best actress Oscar nomination and Hugh Jackman is in total showman mode in this true-life sentimental drama. They play musicians who team up to become a popular Neil Diamond tribute act, and the icon’s songs inspire the couple as they’re forced to weather personal tragedies and professional ups and downs.
Where to watch: Peacock
‘The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants’

Good news: SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) wakes up one morning and is excited to find out he’s 36 clams tall – which means he’s finally a “big guy”! Bad news: He also accidentally conjures the ghostly ship of a villainous pirate, the Flying Dutchman (Mark Hamill), in a family-friendly animated quest full of bravery and silliness.
Where to watch:Paramount+
‘Rental Family’

Brendan Fraser exudes compassion and awkward, earnest charm as an American expat who can’t find his groove as a thespian in Japan. He goes to work for a service that hires out actors to play stand-in roles in their clients’ lives in a heartfelt dramedy that doubles as a touching look at found family and how we all deal with loneliness.
Where to watch: Hulu
‘Urchin’

Harris Dickinson turns in a confident directorial debut with this thoughtful British drama. A young homeless drug addict (Frank Dillane) is sent to prison after a robbery and, newly sober, takes odd jobs to turn around his life when released. But even with new friends, he turns to old vices and finds it tough to stave off his self-destructive tendencies.
