He died in his sleep of natural causes, according to a statement his family shared Friday, March 20.

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” which aired from 1997 to 2003, followed a teenage girl fighting supernatural forces while navigating high school. As Xander, Brendon played one of the few non-superpowered members of the group — a character whose humor and vulnerability helped redefine the “nerdy” best friend on television.

“I actually don’t have a lot of crazy fan interactions,” Brendon said in a 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s just a bunch of dudes who say, ‘Man, you got me laid a lot in high school. You made it cool to be a nerd and awkward and funny.’ I wonder how many babies are out there because Xander got people laid.”

After “Buffy,” Brendon continued working steadily in television and film. He had a recurring role as FBI technical analyst Kevin Lynch on the CBS procedural “Criminal Minds” from 2007 to 2014 and starred in the short-lived Fox series “Kitchen Confidential,” based on Anthony Bourdain’s memoir.

His film credits included 2000’s “Psycho Beach Party,” which developed a cult following, along with roles in genre films such as “Unholy” and “Demon Island.” His later work extended into the 2020s, including the 2024 horror film “Christmas Slasher.”

Nicholas Brendon Schultz was born April 12, 1971, in Los Angeles. He had hoped to play professional baseball before an arm injury shifted his focus to acting. He later said acting helped him manage a childhood stutter and became an advocate for the Stuttering Foundation.

In 2023, Brendon said he had suffered a heart attack and had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. He also experienced cauda equina syndrome, a serious spinal condition that required multiple surgeries.

Beginning in the 2010s, Brendon faced a series of legal troubles, including arrests tied to domestic violence and other charges. Some cases were resolved through plea agreements, including probation. He spoke publicly about his struggles and sought treatment.
