Plumas Arts invites the community to come together for an evening of creativity, music, poetry and local talent as Words & Music returns Thursday, Oct. 8, at Patti’s Thunder Cafe, 557 Lawrence St. in Quincy. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m., with music beginning at 7.

The October gathering will feature Marlo Moor as the evening’s featured artist. Organizers say Moor will offer a unique musical experience using sound bowls as her instrument of choice, filling the intimate space at Patti’s Thunder Cafe with their rich, resonant tones.

Following Moor’s featured performance, the evening will open up to the community for approximately one hour of open mic performances. Singers, musicians, poets, writers and other artists are encouraged to participate and share their talents with friends, neighbors and fellow performers.

Whether someone has performed many times before or is stepping in front of an audience for the first time, the Words & Music open mic is intended to provide a welcoming and supportive place to share creative work. Plumas Arts equally encourages community members who would rather simply listen and enjoy the performances to attend and support the artists taking the stage.

Admission costs $5 per person.

Words & Music history

Words & Music has been bringing artists and audiences together in Plumas County since 1989, making it one of Plumas Arts’ longest-running community programs. The series originally began at Patti’s Thunder Cafe as a monthly poetry reading supported through the California Arts Council. Over time, musicians began joining the open mic, eventually helping the program grow into the combination of spoken word and live music that audiences know today.

Throughout its history, Words & Music has created opportunities for poetry, prose, storytelling, songwriting and live music to share the same stage. “At the heart of the program is the idea that the arts are meant to be shared,” said Plumas Arts. “Words & Music gives established performers an intimate setting to connect with audiences while also providing new and emerging artists with an encouraging place to try something new.”

While Words & Music began in Quincy, the program has also traveled throughout Plumas County, with gatherings taking place in communities including Greenville, Crescent Mills, Chester, Portola and Sierra Valley.
