KATHMANDU: Police have arrested two individuals from Kathmandu with Rs 2.2 million in unexplained cash in connection with cryptocurrency trading.
According to the District Police Range, Kathmandu, the arrested individuals have been identified as 47-year-old Taralal Bishwakarma of Myagang Rural Municipality-5, Nuwakot, currently residing in Budhanilkantha Municipality-6, Kathmandu, and 50-year-old Hom Bahadur K.C. of Modi Rural Municipality-7, Parbat, currently living in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-16.
Police said the arrests were made following a tip-off about illegal digital currency transactions taking place at a bar located in Lazimpat, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-2. A team from the Police Circle, Durbar Marg, was deployed to the scene.
During the operation, police recovered Rs 2.2 million in cash hidden inside a bag carried by Bishwakarma, along with 40 US dollars and four signed cheques without specified amounts, according to police spokesperson Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar Bhattarai.
Police further stated that examination of Bishwakarma’s mobile phone revealed cryptocurrency transactions worth approximately 2,000 USDT through Binance.
The suspects have been remanded for five days by the Kathmandu District Court for further investigation, police said.
