The restaurant chain has announced a collaboration with the popular anime with a new meal lineup and merchandise.
WASHINGTON — Popeyes has announced a collaboration with the popular anime “One Piece” with a limited-time menu and collectibles — but fans who missed the merchandise giveaway at six U.S. locations on Monday will have another shot.
In a news release, Popeyes called the collaboration a celebration of “One Piece,” a long-running Japanese manga and anime about pirates and the hunt for a legendary treasure that has gained global popularity. On Monday, the chain’s locations in the U.S. and Canada added a limited-time menu featuring item names familiar to fans of the anime’s Straw Hat Crew, including a Luffy Bento Box, Gum-Gum Fruit Lemonade and Chopper’s Cupcake.
“The story is about adventure, loyalty, and going all-in for the things you love,” said Matt Rubin, Popeyes chief marketing officer. “This energy perfectly aligns with Popeyes and comes to life throughout this partnership with Toei Animation. We set out to create a collaboration that brings our bold flavors into the world of ‘One Piece’ and its anime fandom, the kind of meal you’d want before setting sail for the Grand Line.”
The release on Monday included collectible “One Piece” Bento Boxes that were part of a giveaway at select Popeyes restaurants in New York, Boston, New Jersey, Chicago, Los Angles and Miami. Videos posted to social media showed long lines outside Popeyes locations that were participating in the merch drop.
For those who didn’t snag a Bento Box in Monday’s giveaway, Popeyes will also release merchandise on its website starting Wednesday, April 15, including keychains, T-shirts and Bento Boxes.
