M. Night Shyamalan is a filmmaker who has done an excellent job of staying relevant since he first made waves with his psychological thriller The Sixth Sense in 1998, and has consistently released projects since his directorial debut in 1992. However, what makes Shyamalan’s filmography even more interesting is how enigmatic he is as a filmmaker. Most of the director’s movies are not only original stories, but are also highly secretive in their marketing. Now, with the filmmaker’s next movie Remain on the way, Shyamalan has revealed that he already has another project in the works.

While discussing his creative process and sharing updates on his YouTube channel, Shyamalan revealed he has already begun work on his next movie. The video, titled “I Started writing My Next Movie Today,” features the filmmaker talking about the initial writing process for his movie, also revealing that he has a title in mind for the project. The video also showed the director’s notebook for the mysterious movie and shared a fun fact: he’s been working on the ideas for it for quite some time, but he’s only now decided to focus all his efforts on bringing the story to the big screen while finishing up work on Remain, due in theaters at the start of 2027.

Shyamalan spoke about how the post-production process of his latest movie won’t impact the writing of this next project, saying that he was “still finishing up Remain, just the last little things to do. A little bit of sound touch-ups and a couple of CGI things. But I kind of overlap writing and finishing the movie all the time.” This small tidbit of information gives context to the director’s workflow and explains how he released a new film every other year. Before Jake Gyllenhaal’s Remain, Shyamalan released the thriller Trap, starring Josh Hartnett.

Remain is an interesting film because, while Shyamalan and novelist Nicholas Sparks developed the original idea, a version of the same story was published as a novel in 2025. However, the director is still credited as the sole writer of the screenplay and with the “Story by” credit. It will be interesting to see how different the movie ends up, as one of the film’s stars, Phoebe Dynevor, explained in an interview that production diverged from the novel. The structure and backstories of the characters are reportedly different, which is unsurprising since the director is famous for wanting to preserve the twists and turns of his films.

With a release date set for Remain at the beginning of next year, Shyamalan will likely shift focus to the untitled movie he’s currently hard at work writing. Each movie in the director’s filmography has been vastly different from the last, with unique premises and unexpected endings. For now, audiences can look forward to seeing how Remain unfolds, with Gyllenhall playing architect Tate Gordon, who heads to Cape Cod to design a home. Secretly battling depression, Gordon’s chance meeting with a mysterious young woman (Dynevor) upends his world while coping with the death of his sister.
