The Medicine Hat Mavericks couldn’t contain the long ball Friday night.
The Moose Jaw Miller Express teed off with three, two-run home runs en route to a 12-2, walk-off, mercy-rule win over Medicine Hat.
Moose Jaw started the onslaught in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of two-run blasts, Pacey Phillips and Thomas Soto going yard on Mavs’ starter Derek Archer.
In the sixth inning, Caden Ransom hit a two-run home run for a 6-0 Moose Jaw lead. An error on a stolen third base allowed another Millers runner to score in the frame, putting the home team ahead 7-0.
Archer finished with seven runs (six earned) against on seven hits and a walk, striking out four. With the strikeouts, he tallies 66 on the season to give him the third-highest total among Mavs’ starters in a single season. He trails Dylan Esquival (2023, 67) and Nathan Gonzalez (2010, 70).
The Mavs got on the board in the top of the seventh, also taking advantage of the long ball.
Carter Roth lifted a two-run home run to left field for his fifth home run of the season and second in as many games, making it a 7-2 game.
That score didn’t last long as the Millers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, a pair scoring on a single up the middle and a third on a wild pitch to put Moose Jaw ahead 10-2. They scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, one on a bases-loaded walk and a second on a fielders choice play to end the game.
JJ Harnett pitched 1.1 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks, striking out one. Jackson Miller took the ball in the eighth and allowed the game-ending hit.
The Mavs (21-31) host the Swift Current 57’s on Saturday for the final home game of the regular season.
