Christopher Nolan made his directorial debut with ‘Following’ in 1998 and broke into mainstream fame two years later
Star career
You’re probably already familiar with the director’s stacked catalogue of director credits, but in case you need a refresher: he’s the mind behind Interstellar, Oppenheimer, Inception and The Dark Knight, as well as Ancient Greek adventure The Odyssey.
His debut Following released in 1998 but Memento (2000) made the director into a star. Before working professionally, a young Christopher developed his skills with home movies featuring action figures, inspired to create Space Wars off the back of Star Wars. Sadly, we’re still waiting for an extended director’s cut of these early works.
Emma Thomas is a successful producer and has worked on all of her husband’s films
Marriage to Dame Emma Thomas
Emma Thomas has found soaring success as a producer, earning three Oscar nominations and winning Best Picture for Oppenheimer. She’s collaborated with husband Christopher since his first film project, Following, making their partnership a success professionally and personally.
The pair met on their first night living in the same hall at University College London in 1989. They married in 1997 and co-own production company Syncopy Inc., which was founded in 2001.
Flora has worked as an actress and costume assistant in several of her father’s projects
Flora Nolan
Christopher and Emma welcomed their oldest child and only daughter, Flora Nolan, in 2001. She has briefly appeared in two of her father’s films: Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
She’s already received credits on several showbiz projects, working in the costume department on …And Just Like That and The Odyssey. Flora has also worked as an actress, appearing in short film Love Bomb Baby and 2025 comedy Concessions.
Oliver is the oldest of Christopher and Emma’s three sons
Oliver Nolan
Oliver is the second oldest of Christopher Nolan’s children, and the oldest of his three boys. Born in the early ’00s, Oliver was quickly thrust in to showbiz, appearing in The Prestige when he was only a baby.
While a production assistant credit on The Odyssey is his only IMDb listing to date, it’s clear Oliver shares his father’s passion for the camera. In 2020, he shot the director at their home in LA for a profile in French newspaper Le Monde.
Rory had an early cameo in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and lent his name to an alias for original feature ‘The Dark Knight’
Rory Nolan
Second son Rory also had a cameo in one of his father’s projects: fan-favourite The Dark Knight Rises (2012) as a boy on a bridge. He joined his father and siblings on the set of The Odyssey as an art department assistant.
Christopher enjoys paying homage to his children in the working title of each of his projects. The Dark Knight was originally known as Rory’s First Kiss, and sequel The Dark Knight Rises reportedly went by the alias Magnus Rex.
Magnus shares his brother’s talent for photography and has also had a cameo role
Magnus Nolan
The powerhouse couple’s youngest arrived in 2008. Magnus, like his siblings, is credited on The Odyssey, working as a production assistant. He also, of course, had a cameo role in famed Nolan feature Inception as the son of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character.
Like his brother, Magnus has a talent for taking the perfect picture. He snapped the cover shot of his director father for a Wired profile in 2023, ahead of the release of Oppenheimer.
Christopher Nolan and Emma Thompson continue to find success (and happiness) together
Continued success
Christopher Nolan and his favourite producer Emma Thomas continue to make waves on the big screen today. Their most recent project The Odyssey adapted Homer’s Greek epic for the 21st-century, featuring an all-star cast, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland.
With two Oscars and eight nominations to his name, the mantelpiece at home is surely getting full, but who knows what next award season could bring for the Hollywood heavyweights?
