This year’s statement from the Premier on BC Day headlines with remarks on the extraordinary environmental experiences that people can have in the outdoors in BC.
The message weaves into Indigenous stewardship of the land, followed by the industrial growth of the province, riding to a stark statement about today’s socioeconomic issues but that hope lies ahead.
“There’s a lot more work to do” has become a tired phrase in Canadian politics, but that’s in the wrap-up of the statement.

Premier David Eby has issued the following statement celebrating B.C. Day:
“Today, we’re celebrating everything that makes our province one of the best places to live in this country we all love.
“British Columbia is a land of extraordinary natural beauty – with abundant resources and endless possibilities.
“From our pristine waters and coastlines to our world-class cities and communities to the forests, mountains, valleys and parks that give so much to the people of this province, we are so lucky to be in B.C.
“The story of our province stretches back thousands of years.
“It starts with the Indigenous Peoples who built thriving communities and cultures that continue to shape British Columbia today.
“Then came the fur trade, followed by the gold rush that transformed British Columbia. And with them came people from all over the world who helped build the province we know today.
“Recently, that has included American nurses and doctors who are choosing to come here and strengthen a health-care system that reflects their values.
“Every generation has helped write the story of British Columbia.
“Our story includes both accomplishments we celebrate and difficult chapters we continue to learn from as we build a better future together.
“Today, we face challenges previous generations could not have imagined, but there is nowhere I would rather be to face a changing world than right here.
“We have the resources, access to growing markets and skilled people to lead a stronger and more independent Canadian economy.
“That’s why we fought hard to secure a new landmark agreement with Ottawa that finally recognizes British Columbia’s central role in Canada’s future. This multibillion-dollar deal will create good jobs, strengthen public services and protect our northern coast.
“Together, we’re making real progress as British Columbians.
“Hundreds are being connected to a family doctor or nurse practitioner every day.
“Rent prices are dropping faster here than anywhere else in Canada.
“More people are training for good-paying jobs, and we’re powering economic growth with clean, made-in-B.C. energy.
“There’s a lot more work to do and more good news to look forward to.
“I hope you have a safe and happy long weekend with friends, family and fun – celebrating this special place we call home.
