As we mark Doctors Day on May 1 and look ahead to the International Day of the Midwife on May 5, I want to reflect on the remarkable work happening across Guelph General Hospital (GGH). Our professional staff bring commitment, compassion, and innovation to their work in ways that continually improve the care we provide Guelph-Wellington. These occasions offer a meaningful opportunity to celebrate that dedication and share some of the important developments shaping the future of GGH.
A few accomplishments from this year
Earlier this year, we were grateful to welcome the President of the Ontario Medical Association, Dr. Zainab Abdurrahman, along with OMA Board Vice Chair, Sharon Bal, and Regional Manager, Scott Witmer. As leaders advocating for the health of Ontarians, their visit offered an opportunity to highlight the incredible work underway at GGH.
Timely access to care remains one of the most pressing challenges facing our health system and GGH is not immune to those pressures. I am proud of the creative and determined responses emerging from our teams, particularly the continued development of the GGH Speedvale Campus and the ongoing work to optimize patient flow across our organization. These efforts reflect a culture of problem-solving that I have come to deeply admire.
I also wanted to extend a sincere thanks to the professional staff team who contributed to our successful Accreditation in the fall. This important milestone reflects our deep commitment to quality improvement and patient safety. Thank you for your leadership and for ensuring alignment with standards across departments.
Looking ahead
We will soon welcome a physician recruiter to GGH, a shared role with the Guelph Family Health Team that represents a meaningful step forward in how we attract and retain professional staff. Their work will focus on areas of greatest clinical need, with the goal of building capacity, improving the resiliency of our teams, and modernizing our recruitment strategy.
I want to extend my sincere appreciation to our professional staff who continue to invest considerable time and effort in recruiting, mentoring, and retaining the physicians required to meet our community’s needs. Much of this work is voluntary, yet it remains an important factor in our clinical stability and long-term success, and I believe it contributes to the great culture we have here at GGH.
Recruitment is also now underway for the next Chief of Staff with my tenure officially coming to an end later this summer. Serving as Chief of Staff over the past two and a half years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, and I leave enormously proud of what we have accomplished. The talent, resilience, and genuine care for patients that I have witnessed every day across this organization has been both humbling and inspiring.
Looking ahead, a key area of focus for the successful Chief of Staff candidate will be advancing our Clinical Services Plan and transitioning outpatient services such as endoscopy and our orthopedic fracture clinic to the GGH Speedvale Campus. These initiatives will play a pivotal role in strengthening the future of care and will define our service identity within the region.
Finally, while Doctors Day and the International Day of the Midwife are occasions to celebrate our physician and midwifery colleagues, I want to be clear that the care we provide is only possible because of everyone on the GGH team. To our nurses, allied health professionals, support staff, and all those that work behind the scenes: your contributions matter deeply, and they are felt by every patient who walks through our doors. Thank you for all that you do, today and every day. It has been a privilege to serve as this community’s Chief of Staff over the past two and a half years.
Yours in health,
Dr. Alex Ferguson
Chief of Staff, Guelph General Hospital
