A young woman who ran an anonymous gossip page on Snapchat in Calabar has been handed over to the police after unverified and damaging stories she published about residents caused significant personal and business harm to several individuals in the community.

The blogger had set up the page by inviting followers to submit anonymous messages, many of which contained false and defamatory claims against named individuals. Rather than verifying the submissions, she reportedly published them indiscriminately as her page continued to attract viewers.

Among the most damaging posts was an allegation targeting a popular club owner, accusing him of being unfaithful to his wife and of living with HIV. The claim spread rapidly across Calabar within days, with devastating consequences. The club owner’s business suffered a sharp decline in patronage, and his wife reportedly left the family home following the allegations. Several other business owners and married women were similarly accused of prostitution or infidelity in posts that circulated widely on the platform.

Reports indicate that far from shutting down the page in the face of the harm it was causing, the blogger continued posting as her follower count grew. She had also begun monetising the page by accepting paid advertisements, profiting from the controversy her publications had stirred.

Her downfall came when those most affected by the damaging posts traced her location and confronted her at her residence. She was beaten by the aggrieved parties and compelled to record a public apology video, in which she admitted that the HIV allegation against the club owner was entirely fabricated.

She was subsequently taken to the police, where authorities demanded she provide evidence to support the claims she had published and disclose the identities of those who had sent her the anonymous messages. She reportedly admitted to officers that her sole motivation for running the page had been to grow her Snapchat following.
