We recently attended a presentation at Google where it was revealed that searches for ‘red merino socks’ had jumped 70% in the past month!
Brands are serving up plenty of red socks to feed our shopping desires, and so on rolls the surprise styling hack of the season.
Why is this very niche item trending? It may have something to so with the ‘pop of red’ styling approach. Also known as the ‘unexpected red theory,’ this viral trend follows the idea that adding one small red element to an otherwise neutral or coordinated look adds a chic exclamation point of visual interest.
First touched on in the world of interior design, using a small dash of bold red has now also filtered through to fashion, making it a desirable accessory colour across hats, bags, shoes and now socks.
Or perhaps it’s simply because it’s freezing, and there’s nothing like natural wool – merino, possum-merino or cashmere are incredibly soft and warm – to add an insulating layer?
Of course, red socks also have a very patriotic history in New Zealand, so we’re happy to see them back in any regard. Sailor Sir Peter Blake’s red socks became a national symbol of luck during the victorious 1995 America’s Cup campaign, and that playful vibe has lingered over the decades.

When it comes to red, adding a pair works for men’s or women’s outfits. Style them with neutral foundations such as simple separates in navy, tan, white, cream, black, charcoal or olive. Or, try styling them with a trending denim shape like mid-blue barrel-leg jeans.
The key is to keep them as the only bright element. Choosing a mid-calf, fine rib version works perfectly with tailored items and loafers or simple flats, but a fluffy pair also feels right with slouchy casual pieces and sneakers.
