We already know that the bob is bigger news this year than ever before. Fresh out of the gate for 2026 hair trends: the kicktail bob, the cowgirl bob, the Trixie, the bixie and the micro-bob have all taken a recent turn at the top of the best bobs barometer. Even the French girl bob (which kick-started the bob’s current reign in the early 2020s, right before the longer and more voluptuous Italian bob sashayed into the room) is having un moment.

Welcome to the ‘fashion bob’

But the bob to know right now? Meet the ‘fashion bob’. It’s short and it’s not overly styled, though it might be flipped over to one side or tucked behind an ear. ‘Models are all having it done,’ says Zoë Irwin; trend forecaster and creative director of John Frieda’s Mayfair salon. ‘The agencies are sending them into the salon, because the girls with short hair are getting all the jobs.’

Why fashion loves a short bob hairstyle

Think about it, explains Irwin. ‘Haircuts have a lot to do with the fashion movement at the time. What’s been dominant in the past five years is the influx of blazers, exaggerated shoulders and high necks. Those styles are everywhere, from Zara and COS to Massimo Dutti, and if you look at their campaign imagery, they’re often styled on a girl with a really short bob, because that’s what shows off the shape of the clothes.’ John Frieda’s style director, Eugene, continues Irwin, recently cut a bob on a model who’d been sent in by her agent, ‘and the hits on Instagram were through the roof.’

‘Bob hairstyles strike that balance of polished and effortless that people are drawn to right now, but social media has definitely amplified the trend because visually, bobs are incredibly impactful,’ notes Jordanna Cobella, colour and trend ambassador for Wella and owner of Cobella salon in London’s Knightsbridge. ‘A good bob completely changes someone’s silhouette, so they photograph really well.’

From reel life to midlife women: who’s really getting a bob?

Ok, so models and Instagram hits are one thing, but what about the fashion bob IRL? ‘It’s not just a case of people liking the idea of them online,’ promises Cobella, ‘women are absolutely cutting them in for real. In salons, there’s been a huge shift towards clients wanting more shape and movement, and often that means losing length. There’s also a confidence to a short bob that people are really connecting with. It feels clean, elevated and fashion-forward without trying too hard, which fits perfectly with where beauty and hair trends are moving overall.’

‘I’m cutting a lot of short bobs on women in their late forties and fifties,’ observes Zoë Irwin. ‘An especially short bob is super-flattering if you’re losing definition around your neck and jaw, so if you’re brave enough to do it, it can be one of the best styles to have if you’re worried about your face changing shape with age. I’m also getting a lot of women come to me when either they’re taking their careers to the next level or switching into a more corporate role, and they want a stronger look.’

‘Am I cutting more bobs?’ considers Mason Josh, principal stylist at Josh Wood. ‘I wouldn’t say any more than usual, but I have noticed that the demographic has changed. I’m seeing more women in their 30s to 50s getting them, which I really like. It’s a great way to reinvent your look, and the 30+ age group is often the one with the guts to do it.’ A shorter fashion bob, he points out, is often more expensive to keep going than a longer style, so it helps to have some disposable income. ‘It needs more maintenance, as it can quickly grow out of shape, which means having it trimmed more frequently.’

Back at John Frieda, I ask Eugene Smith of viral bob frame whether his Instagram likes translated into cuts in the chair. ‘Oh I’ve been doing more bobs than ever, and they’re short,’ he declares. Can everyone carry off the fashion bob? ‘Well, there’s a big difference between here and here,’ says Smith, indicating first the mid-point of his neck then just above his jaw. ‘With a bob like that, there’s nowhere to hide, so you need to feel good and confident about it. But usually, if someone wants one, they already have the confidence to wear it. If it’s not going to suit you, you’re probably not asking for it’.

What defines the ‘fashion bob’?

The ‘fashion bob’ is not solely defined by length, but by texture and finish, too, says Lorraine Dublin, celebrity stylist and co-owner of My Hair Bar. ‘Modern bobs are much softer and more wearable than they used to be. There’s more movement and natural bend through them, so they don’t feel too perfect or rigid. That slightly undone finish is what makes them feel current.’

And while fashion and practicality don’t always go hand in hand, they do here. ‘Social media has definitely pushed the trend, because bobs photograph beautifully, but there’s been a huge shift in salons towards healthier-looking, lower-maintenance hair that still feels fashion-forward. The bob fits perfectly into that,’ says Dublin, also pointing out that ‘a textured bob can make finer hair feel fuller and give thicker hair more movement and lightness, so it works across so many different hair types.’

How to wear the ‘fashion bob’

The versatility of a ‘fashion bob’, picks up Jordanna Cobella, means we can all give this distinctive cut our own spin with very little effort. ‘What’s interesting is that the bob now feels less intimidating than it used to. The modern versions are softer and more adaptable, so people don’t feel like they’re committing to one rigid style. They can be tucked behind the ears, air dried naturally or styled sleek depending on the mood, which makes them feel much more accessible.

‘The key to this look is softness,’ says Dale Herne, stylist at Hershesons Fitzrovia. ‘It moves naturally and feels a bit undone. That’s what gives it that effortless, cool finish.’

‘The best way to style it is actually really simple,’ he continues. ‘Let it air dry, using the Hershesons Air Dry Spray to create natural texture, and tuck both sides behind your ears so you put the shape into the front. That creates soft movement as it dries, and then you can flick it out slightly afterwards. If your hair doesn’t air dry that well, just give it a quick blast with the The Hershesons Great Hair Dryerand then add a really loose tong (The Hershesons Wand) through a few pieces.’

If flipping to one side is on your styling agenda, leave that touch until last. ‘The key is styling everything from a middle parting. I wouldn’t really style it from the side because it can start to look too static and a bit forced,’ recommends Herne.
